Flush Ridges

The traditional ridge was flush with the plane of the roof. Some illustrations from the 19th century show patterning, rather like cross-stitching, on the ridge.

This was made using lengths of split hazel or willow ('liggers') clamped into the ridge by spars.

Flush ridges are sometimes decorated this way today but a plainer finish is more traditional to most parts of Britain.
